McCain, Obama and a draw

Written by admin on July 16, 2008 – 10:58 am -

SAN DIEGO  —  During Barack Obama’s speech to the 40th annual conference of the National Council of La Raza Sunday, the presumptive Democratic nominee casually referred to “my friend Hillary Clinton.”

The Latino radio talk show host next to me quipped, “So they’re friends now?”

“Yeah,” I joked. “That’s how you know neither of them is Latino. We’ll hold a grudge for 500 years.”

Latinos aren’t known to forgive and forget. And that’s a problem for John McCain, who spoke Monday. The presumptive Republican nominee has put at risk decades of support from Latino voters in Arizona because of the perception he flip-flopped on immigration. Whereas once he talked about the need for a comprehensive approach that includes giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, he now calls first for securing the border.

But for many Latinos, it’s not just what McCain says that is the problem. It’s why he says it. He’s clearly attempting to placate the nativist fringe of the GOP. So the message that Latinos take away is that the Arizona senator is a fair-weather friend.

Senate bows to Bush, approves surveillance bill

Written by admin on July 10, 2008 – 3:29 am -

WASHINGTON - Bowing to President Bush’s demands, the Senate approved and sent the White House a bill Wednesday to overhaul bitterly disputed rules on secret government eavesdropping and shield telecommunications companies from lawsuits complaining they helped the U.S. spy on Americans.
The relatively one-sided vote, 69-28, came only after a lengthy and heated debate that pitted privacy and civil liberties concerns against the desire to prevent terrorist attacks. It ended almost a year of wrangling in the Democratic-led Congress over surveillance rules and the president’s warrantless wiretapping program that was initiated after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The House passed the same bill last month, and Bush said he would sign it soon.

Opponents assailed the eavesdropping program, asserting that it imperiled citizens’ rights of privacy from government intrusion. But Bush said the legislation protects those rights as well as Americans’ security.

“This bill will help our intelligence professionals learn who the terrorists are talking to, what they’re saying and what they’re planning,” he said in a brief White House appearance after the Senate vote.

Eight new natural wonders, including the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico and what has been dubbed “the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean,” have been added to the World Heritage List.

World Heritage Sites are named by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The sites, both cultural and natural, added to the list are deemed “of outstanding value to humanity” and deserve protection and preservation, according to the UNESCO Web site.

With the new additions, the World Heritage List now boasts 878 sites (679 cultural, 174 natural and 25 mixed) in 145 countries. The eight new natural sites added this year include:

* Joggins Fossil Cliffs (Canada)
* Mount Sanqingshan National Park (China)

* Socotra Archipelago (Yemen)

“These eight stunning natural sites are amongst the best of what nature has to offer,” said David Sheppard, head of the IUCN’s Protected Areas Program, which recommended the sites. (IUCN stands for International Union for Conservation of Nature.)

Below are details on all the sites:

The Socotra Archipelago is known as “the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean” and is home to 825 plant species of which 37 percent can only be found there. Ninety percent of its reptile species can be found nowhere else. Medication managers, drug stores merge networks

WASHINGTON - The drug store and pharmacy benefit management industries on Tuesday will announce a combination of their information systems in order to boost electronic prescribing by physicians.
The merger combines the RxHub network, operated by CVS Caremark Corp., Express Scripts Inc. and MedcoHealth Solutions Inc., with Surescripts, which is run by the drug store industry’s two main trade groups.

Executives for the two industries said the transaction, which closed Monday, will make electronic prescribing more convenient and efficient for physicians.

“This merger sets aside historic economic and political differences to do what is necessary to advance paperless prescribing and the secure exchange of critical information,” said John Driscoll, president for new markets with MedcoHealth Solutions.

Federal Reserve holds rates steady for now

Written by admin on June 26, 2008 – 4:23 am -

WASHINGTON - With inflation moving higher on its worry list, the Federal Reserve held interest rates steady Wednesday, ending nearly a year of cuts to bolster the economy, and hinted that the next direction for rates could be up.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and all but one of his central bank colleagues agreed that the best course was to leave a key rate alone at 2 percent, as the country slogs through the crosscurrents of plodding economic growth and zooming energy and food prices that threaten to spread inflation.

That meant the prime lending rate for millions of consumers and businesses stayed at 5 percent. The prime rate applies to certain credit cards, home equity lines of credit and other loans.

The decision brought to a close a powerful series of rate reductions that started in September and extended through late April. It was the central bank’s most aggressive intervention in two decades to shore up an economy bruised by the trio of housing, credit and financial crises.

On Wall Street, stocks ended with a modest gain. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 4.40 points to 11,811.83. Broader stock indicators managed to log stronger gains than the blue chips.

Tunes and politics mix at Bonnaroo

Written by admin on June 16, 2008 – 1:30 am -

MANCHESTER, Tenn. - Destination festivals are a universe unto their own where the real world is left in the parking lot. But at this year’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, the outside world and its problems — politics, high gas prices — were always lurking just offstage, and sometimes were front and center.
“There’s a time and place for this kind of talk, right?” Eddie Vedder said to the tens of thousands watching Pearl Jam perform their scintillating headlining set Saturday. “It is welded into the Constitution that people have not only the right, but the responsibility to make change. It can’t get any worse. We’re right here in the middle of America. We can change the whole world. Do you agree that this is the time and place for this kind of talk?”

Cheering loudly, most in the crowd agreed.

Vedder spoke repeatedly about the need for change and about the Iraq War, occasionally reprimanding himself for not staying positive. Pearl Jam’s performance was undoubtedly a high point for this year’s Bonnaroo, highlighted by a sing-along version of “Better Man” during which the vast audience held lighters aloft and a near-full moon shone from behind the stage.

The elements can often be a major factor at Bonnaroo — held annually on a 700-acre site south of Nashville — but temperatures were bearable. Hard rain fell for a time late Friday night, making My Morning Jacket’s exuberant 3-hour midnight concert a memorably soaked one. Sunday, the final day of the four-day fest, was beautifully clear and was further warmed by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, who exuded contentment in the unlikely (and hugely popular) late chapter in his career.

On the same stage Friday night, Chris Rock played to one of the largest rooms a comedian will ever work. As many as 60,000 of the estimated 80,000 in attendance watched him command the crowd with a relentless pace and sharp observations.

Rock, of course, had barbs for the presumed presidential nominees, John McCain and Barack Obama — who he said has a name so black-sounding that he could be “the bass player for the Commodores.”
